Although Holywell Street was numbered as it is today by 1836, the person who recorded the 1841 census failed to record the house numbers, which makes the directories dating from around that year invaluable.
Below is a list of house numbers and inhabitants gleaned from the following four directories:
- Robson's Commercial Directory for 1839
- Pigot's Directory of Oxfordshire & Berkshire for 1842
- Hunt & Co's Oxford Directory for 1846
- Post Office Directory of Oxfordshire & Berkshire for 1847
No fewer than 22 of the 100 houses were occupied by a college servant with his family.
Some houses are not yet identified: e.g. the 1837 directory lists John Stricks as a warm bath proprietor in Holywell Street: possibly this was in Bath Place.
Holywell Street was renumbered at some point between 28 May and 9 July 1836.
